 | Artemis is a massive floating island city-fortress located 5 kilometers away from the island of Agrihan in the middle Pacific Ocean. It is in the shape of an octagon. It is 2.5 kilometers wide and 2.5 kilometers tall. Construction on Artemis started in the late 2050s, as part of a global effort to further boost humanity. It was built with help from many countries and companies, especially those with access to ultra-deepwater drilling technologies. It is connected to the sea floor by a massive concrete, steel, and high-tension wire pillar. The island-city itself is about 100 meters above sea-level. There is not a single part of the island that is wasted space. There are two residential blocks, an industrial block, a commercial block, a warehouse and storage block, a seaport, an airport, two 500 meter by 500 meter parks, an agricultural block, and a central government block. Artemis is connected to Agrihan by a massive bridge that also serves as housing.

Knowing that they'd need a way to refine and then eventually control their latent abilities, he started to build this momentous project with backing from mysterious funders. When it was opened in the early 50's, it was inundated with applicants from all walks of life. Located in an unknown part of the world, the school's location is consistently kept a secret in order to keep away those who would rather destroy it and all spiritually-powered beings within (OOC: It's deep in China). In order to give the students the fullest possible experience, the school has been outfitted with several state-of-the-art training facilities, and the school itself is surrounded by a dormitory city that offers housing for even the most volatile of ability-users.

For this reason Sōsuke Aizen sought to destroy it, as necessary to create a copy of the Ōken.
