| Sǐwáng Human Template Basics Name: Otoha Hakurei Titles: Previous Generation Hakurei Shrine Maiden (先代博麗の巫女 [せんだいはくれいのみこ] Sendai Hakurei no Miko) True Age: 1,780 Gender: Female Personality: Otoha... she's very serious when it comes to her work. From an early age, that's all she cared about. Even after giving birth to her child, that's all she cared about. She trained her daughter to be a shrine maiden like she was. She didn't do much else with her daughter besides that. Otoha's goal was to protect her shrine at all costs. Even if it meant sacrificing those closest to her. And it has happened—her having to sacrifice those closest to her. Her regret from having to do that is said to be the cause of her curse having to live so long. There isn't a day that goes by that she doesn't wish for her to be able to change what she's done. Despite her many travels, she doesn't feel it was worth what she has done. "My curse is to continue to live with my mistakes, to never be able to escape to somewhere where they do not matter." Because of that sort of view, Otoha is seen as being cold and distant. That's somewhat true. She distances herself because of her past mistakes. However, she's also a magnet for danger being such an infamous shrine maiden. She says it's better for her to do things alone, that way it won't be another person's blood on her hands if they choose to fight beside her. If they're killed in the crossfire whilst not participating, it doesn't affect her as much—if at all. She'll put that person's soul to rest and move on. This "coldness" also comes from always declining requests or jobs related to her profession. Despite being a shrine maiden, never ask her to do an exorcism or anything of the sort. This is because she can't do the normal, traditional purification. That and she'd rather not step into another shrine's territory and start doing their job. Only when they can't handle a situation (such as a hollow making a ruckus) does Otoha jump in. As a "nontraditional shrine maiden," her tactics are sometimes viewed as heresy, giving her good reason to avoid the other shrine maidens. Despite being seen as so cold, Otoha... is truly a mother. It could be from her neglect of her child when she needed it most, but Otoha's motherly instincts are incredibly strong. Despite being so scarred, so battle-worn, and so frightening, she is truly a "nice" person. She talks rough and like a man normally, but she can switch to being the nicest, most polite person many people will ever meet in an instant. While she isn't known to do it by others, Otoha will take care of any stray cats she comes across during her travels. Dogs are slightly different to her, as she feels them as being "predators in disguise," whilst cats are predators who have lost their "will to hunt." A cat that Otoha helps is always given a red ribbon tied to their tail. Otoha doesn't take kindly to seeing broken homes, but won't do anything to fix it. She says that "while sad, I can't solve anything." She knows that it'd take someone to realize what they're doing is wrong to actually fix the situation, but Otoha doesn't want to give that push to the person as it's not her place. General Appearance Appearance: Since she lived in a time before sutras were truly usable for the purposes of a shrine maiden, her methods of dealing with troublesome spirits were rather more brutal: powerful physical blows backed by fast movement and divine power, breaking bones and crushing organs. A result of this is that her customizations to the miko uniform reflect the need for hand-to-hand combat. She wears a one-piece skintight undergarment rather than a sarashi, sturdy combat boots, and a hakama rather than a skirt. These have all been added over time, however. She has a hime cut and wears her hair free of accessories. However, past variations included sandals, a bow and/or hair tubes. Her body, while incredibly muscular, is scarred more than most yakuza. - Spoiler:
Appearance Age: Late-20s Height: 193cm (6'4") Weight: 73kg (162lbs) Natural Abilities Natural Abilities: Strength: Otoha's strength is not... brute force. To put it into a metaphor, think of her punching an oncoming train. Normally, a punch capable of averting damage done by the train is just going to crumple it like hitting a brick wall. Otoha's strikes are like being cut by a sword. If she struck the train, it wouldn't crumple. No, it'd split into multiple pieces. To put it simply, her strength is "precise." A single punch to the heart by someone of equivalent normal strength could shatter the entire ribcage, but one by Otoha would only create a tiny crack but still achieve the same result—death. This is because she can't waste stamina just trying to break everything in a wide area—i.e. hollow masks. So, she had to find a way to put all of the damage that would be spread out into one tiny location. Speed: Otoha's speed is comparable to her strength. She isn't good for long distance sprints. That's not what speed is to her. She's capable of moving short distances almost superhuman-like. Actually, it is superhuman. She's a devestating close-range fighter because of this and her speed. Reishi Abilities Type: Zhànlüè [internal] Appearance change: No. Abilities: Jōka (浄化; cleansing): Simply put, this puts Otoha as having a very distinct effect on spiritual beings. This does not just apply to "evil" or "dark" ones like Hollows, Arrancar, and Vizard. If she is fighting against a spiritual being, her tier is upped by one (ex. if she were a 2-2, she'd be a 2-1) for the duration of their encounter. This is due to the other's presence forcing her body to "cleanse" her own internal energy to make it more efficient. Once she hits 0-tier, this does not apply. Nehan (涅槃; Nirvana): Nehan is her version of a Konsou. It works on both Hollows and normal spirits. In order for it to work, she must first chant "Namuamidabutsu (南無阿弥陀仏)" which literally means "I believe in the Amida Buddha." This allows the other person to go into "Amida's Paradise," putting their souls at rest. Otoha's hand must make contact with that soul's head or break the mask of a hollow for it to work. It has an interesting effect as well, in that it can also send Shinigami back to the Soul Society. This doesn't harm the Shinigami in any way whatsoever; it just moves them elsewhere. It also can not work on spirits who were wicked in life. Tenbatsu (天罰; Damnation): If Nehan is her version of sending a soul to the Soul Society, then Tenbatsu allows Otoha to open the Gates of Hell to send someone in. This can only be done to hollows and spirits who were wicked in their lifetime. (If this happens with a PC , the PC must be unconcious by Otoha in order to do so. The PC can break free from the chains of hell if they repent [see: get an admin's approval].) To use this, even after using the mantra from Nehan, she must recite the mantra "Shiken Haramitsu Daikoumyo (四拳 波羅蜜 大光明)" which translates to "the sensation and the harmony perceived by the sense of hearing and heart."
Kurushimi (苦しみ; Suffering): Kurushimi allows Otoha to actually deal damage to spiritual beings. Kurushimi is what keeps her Reishi flowing much like how modern Qi users do. The difference is the direction of the flow. If compared to the heart, the higher-pressure arteries would be going to the heart and not away. The lower pressure veins would be taking blood away. This gives Otoha a stronger "core" whilst not being able to use extensions of the core.
Kanōsei no Kemono (可能性の獣; Beast of Possibilities): A title and a curse, although she never refers to it as a title. This is what has allowed Otoha to live as long as she has. She has seen the possibilities of shrine maidens through her own bloodline, as she regards them as some of the strongest in the nation. However, it has also limited her to being unable to learn from her successors. She can not use modern Sutras to seal spirits, she can only use her current styles. She can modify it based on the Sutras and the like, but she can not use Sutras themselves. That's the first half of this ability. The second half is keeping Otoha a little under control. She can exert the internal Reishi she has to create her own version of Reiatsu, which is somewhat thicker and more "holy" than actual Reiatsu. This gives her enhanced strength and speed on top of her already-abnormal specs. She can keep it up for three posts once per thread. In order to release, she must say the mantra "Namu Myōhō Renge Kyō (南無妙法蓮華經)" which translates to "Devotion to the Mystic Law of the Lotus Sutra."
Past & Roleplay Sample
Character Background: Character Background: Otoha is from a generation far gone. If a generation is every 10 years, then Otoha's generation ended 177 generations ago. Born 1,780 years ago, Otoha was one of the last of what you could call "purely physical" shrine maidens. Like those before her, Otoha fought against the "impure spirits" and sent along the spirits of the deceased not with magic but with her body. She was wed at fourteen to a monk from another temple across the mountains. She stayed at the shrine and helped cleanse the village. She had her first child at sixteen, a daughter. By this time, Otoha had fully taken over for her now-ill mother. She was completely dedicated to her work, spending time with her daughter only to teach her the ways of being a shrine maiden. It wasn't as if she did not love her daughter—she was one of the happiest things to ever happen to Otoha. It's just... Otoha loved her duty more. Or rather, she thought she did.
When Otoha's daughter was fifteen, she was preparing to get married. However, her husband felt something off about the man she was going to marry. Despite knowing her husband had (at that time) a more keen nose for those sorts of thing, Otoha actually had to leave the shrine to help someone over the mountains. She left it in his care and set out. As the trip was long, it took her three weeks to return (one travelling to, one there, and one returning). However, half of the shrine roof was gone. Her husband was inside the almost-crumbling shrine with his legs pinned under a support beam and many claw-like cuts on his body. Obviously about to breathe his last breath, he told her "I was right" before passing away from blood loss. Otoha knew what he meant—that the man her daughter was to marry was not of pure spirit. Although he too was a monk, Otoha destroyed the front door to his temple. She found skeletons and decaying bodies whose smell was overpowered by a sulfur spring nearby. Without giving him a chance to explain, talk, or even fight back—Otoha released her full power. Screaming the mantra for Tenbatsu while crying, she left a hole through that man's face. Her daughter was to be his next victim, but had not succumbed to him yet. Otoha left the shrine in her care, giving her daughter the right to marry anyone she found suitable.
It was at that point that Otoha—broken and depressed—left the shrine and became a wandering priestess. Over the years, she learned she didn't age further. She prayed to the gods for answers, and got one in a nightmare. She remembered when she killed that man. She remembered that she was supposed to save and not kill him. She was going to be forced to live with that sin forever, carrying her mistakes through the generations. She traveled the country, performing exorcisms, purification, and just routine work with her hands. Her body became more and more scarred over time. Now it's hard to find an inch of skin on her arms that isn't scarred up. Otoha has witnessed firsthand the end of the generation of punching those spirits to cleanse them. Although she agrees it's much safer now, she also feels that there's a bit of a lack of discipline in priestesses now. | |
