Name: Araragi, Kyotetsu
True Age: 152
Gender: Male
Personality: Have you ever heard the term: "Business in the front, party in the back?" This is the kind of thing that Kyotetsu exemplifies. During his days as a Captain, he is harsh, sharp and tactful, keeping a watchful eye over his division like a hawk. He will find every small mistake and punish it accordingly, for even the smallest chink in the armor of a warrior may be easily exploited. He will tell you this every time you walk past him, until it is embedded in your brain. If he does not believe that you are doing your job to the fullest, then he will pull you aside and tell you this, as well as every single little problem he has had with you over the past three weeks. Of course, there are always small things he overlooks--it's easy to get past his view if you
appear to be doing enough work, since slacking obviously doesn't look like working. As a result, he isn't amazingly well-liked by his Division. He's seen as prudish and irritating, and can often be the source of much jest by his division members.
This is, for one simple reason, not the true face of Kyotetsu. It's his job. He has to be like this. If he isn't, then his superiors may just turn him into something he doesn't want to be--as a result, he puts on this very harsh and strict façade in order to keep those who might say otherwise happy. Out of public eye, Kyotetsu is
lazy. He doesn't enjoy cleaning that much, but will do it if he has to--in fact, if he can avoid doing something until later, he most certainly will. He is relaxed, easy-going and definitely not the kind of man you see in public. For obvious reasons, he tries his best to avoid being seen like this; though his Vice-Captain knows this, as will any other people he becomes particularly close to. It remains to be said, of course, that his exceptionally harsh public face is something that makes it very difficult for people to get close enough to him to find out the real Kyotetsu.
He enjoys good food, good beer and good music. He has a habit of pronouncing peoples' names incorrectly on purpose to irritate them--it's merely teasing. He realizes that if he were to show his private face, he may garner a bit more respect; but at the same time, he'd lose discipline amongst his Shinigami. If they die because they slacked off, he would blame himself unequivocally--every single death in the Division since he was Captain has been
his fault in his mind, and he blames himself for this every night. He remembers the names of every one of the dead.
General
Appearance
- Spoiler:
Appearance Age: 23
Height: 5'11"
Weight: 158lb
Natural Abilities
Zanpakutō: Kyotetsu's Zanpakutō looks like a regular Katana while sealed.
Zanpakutō Release Phrase: "Show your teeth, Kendai Uzumaki!" (This is not the proper release phrase and as a result only unlocks about 50% of the Zanpakutō's power. Kyotetsu does not know this.)
Other Weapons: He carries a king's ransom worth of throwing knives, and a pair of bo staves for fighting without his Zanpakutō.
Zanpakutō Spirit
Zanpakutō Spirit Name: Drunk Princess (Yo~tsuojo)
Zanpakutō Spirit Appearance:Zanpakutō Spirit Personality: She's pretty much always drunk, this is something that you must know about Yotsu. She's a bit of a lazy-ass, and speaks in riddles (mostly to irritate Kyotetsu). She has good intentions, however--she doesn't want to see people unnecessarily hurt, and she also wants to see Kyotetsu have a good time. She's a bit of a seductress when she wants to be, and has helped Kyotetsu "unwind" before. She disapproves of his public face.
Zanpakutō Spirit's World:Shikai
Shikai Name: Kendai Uzumaki (Sword Maelstrom) (This is not its real name, therefore Kyotetsu only has access to about half of it.)
Shikai Appearance: Kendai Uzumaki does not really change in appearance when it goes across from sealed to Shikai.
Shikai Abilities: Kendai Uzumaki is actually particularly simplistic in both its conception and its effect. It only has one major effect, and that is to replicate one cut in fifty different ways. When Kyotetsu makes a cut with this Zanpakutō, his cut is then made from forty-nine other angles at the exact same time, depending on how Kyotetsu would have cut. It is highly unlikely that all fifty strikes will hit the target. The cut has to
hit to be replicated.
Bankai
Bankai Name: Saiaku no Jitai (Perfect Storm) (This is not its real name, therefore Kyotetsu only has access to about half of it.)
Bankai Appearance: Kyotetsu's Zanpakutō copies itself momentarily, the copy shattering into a thousand pieces and spinning around in a whirling storm that surrounds Kyotetsu. Kyotetsu still holds the katana that is his regular Zanpakutō.
Bankai Abilities: As with his Shikai, Saiaku no Jitai is very simplistic. The storm that surrounds Kyotetsu is effectively a million small blades, that cut at enemies and allies alike within. The storm doesn't spread out very far from Kyotetsu, who is at the center. As well as this, Kendai Uzumaki's original effects do not fade away, though they only make twenty-five cuts each. The storm appears as if it were a very thick mist. It can last up to ten rounds before fading away.
Phantom Cuts: Every two rounds, Kyotetsu can forge blades from the mist of shards. These blades cut at enemies within on their own, making about ten attacks in one round before fading away in the same time. They are easy to dodge and defend against, but the number of angles they attack from can make things difficult. Kyotetsu can forge up to two blades per enemy.
Past & Roleplay Sample
Character Background: There comes a time in every man's life when he has to choose--does he become that which he aspires to be, or does he give that up and become a part of the world that he must become? Kyotetsu had to make that decision, at one point in his life. He doesn't like to talk about it often, because it involves his life as he lived it--but it is sometimes something that comes up. When he was still human, and this was quite some time ago, he had the choice. He could've become the singer that he wanted to be, a man who would have played to every world stage, become the next big thing... but his family did not want that. His family wanted him to become a salaryman, a person who gave up everything he wanted to be in order to have stability. They wanted him to become a salaryman, to have a wife and a family. While he didn't want this, he knew that he had no choice but to comply. If he didn't, his family would make his life hell. If he didn't, he would likely have been disowned. He hated it, but he did it anyway.
Three weeks later, Kyotetsu Araragi was found dead in a motel room. He had apparently overdosed on sleeping drugs--it was a clear suicide. No note had been left, and it was investigated as a murder for that reason, but his parents knew that it could not have been anything else. Over those three weeks they had watched the light vanish from their son's eyes. Eventually, the light must have completely gone away. They hated it, but they accepted it as a sign of weakness and continued their old ways. Kyotetsu's siblings have treated their children this way, and their children have treated their children this way. But not Kyotetsu. He has no children to speak of. Instead, he became a Shinigami--he found out about his latent powers not to long after entering the Soul Society.
At first, he found it difficult to adjust to life as a Shinigami. They required discipline which he didn't really think he had. His actions earned him little more than disgust from a lot of his classmates, and his voice was silenced whenever he felt the need to sing. Slowly, but surely, the rest of the fun was being drained from Kyotetsu's life. He needed a release. He found her.
Her name was Mikaela, and she became both Kyotetsu's friend, and his lover. The pair shared nights together, and Kyotetsu sung to her. During the day, he was stoic and harsh, giving strong criticisms and showing off the facade of pure seriousness. It worked. He was never bothered again, and continued to live the lie that he lived. Mikaela eventually left him, citing that he wasn't what she wanted, and Kyotetsu accepted that. He accepted that sometimes, you had to let go of things to be able to hold onto them. He had let go of his carefree nature, but continued to have it in the background.
When he left the Soul Society, his discipline had him quickly pushed up the ranks. Shikai was a breeze--in fact, few had learned it as quickly and with as much ease as Kyotetsu. He did not understand why, though he was certain that it was his newfound and frequently-used discipline. He continued to sing during the nights, however. During those dark hours, Kyotetsu felt the most alive. He sung lamentations of time lost and loves that had gone away. Nobody attributed the singing voice to Kyotetsu, however, and he kept up his image of being serious during the daytime.
Bankai was a more difficult affair. As it turned out, his Zanpakutō spirit actually didn't appreciate his more serious demeanors, wanting to play casually at all times. This made it hard on Kyotetsu, who would be unable to learn Bankai without giving away his secret. In the end, he left the Seireitei, practicing Bankai outside of the Runkongai borders. A few people chanced upon him, but he shooed them off quickly enough. Eventually he was merely sharing drinks with his Zanpakutō as he learned Bankai.
Over time--and with his Bankai discovery--Kyotetsu raised up through the ranks of the Sixth Division completely, becoming a young and prodigal Captain. He is still not completely aware of everything he is capable of, though that is a story for another day...
