From outward appearances, Tohno Shiki is your everyday run-of-the-mill high school student. He isn't the Casanova of the school whose aim is to earn the favor of gullible schoolgirls nor is he the top athlete of the football team . Rather, he takes pride in the fact that he is your everyday high school student. As long as you keep a low profile, the likelihood of attracting unwanted attention is close to nil. Although he isn't an attention-seeker, Tohno is not adverse to making friends. He won't be the first to say hello, yet when spoken to, he is most polite.  

Due to his brush with death, Tohno is not overly-concerned with living, and is a man who chooses to cherish every moment of his life. Just living life is sufficient enough for him. As such, he will not openly look for confrontation, even though he is certainly capable of handling him self during combat. Although Shiki is fairly nice to complete strangers such as his schoolmates, he has a penchant for being mean towards the ones he loves - that is to say, he wastes no time in teasing the people he cherishes the most. And yet, even though he tends to tease the ones he loves, his will to protect them is endless.

Even though he may not be the type who would openly throw his life away, he has no qualms of throwing his body and soul on the line for those he cares for. He will never allow those he cares for to be hurt by anybody. Every single person he feels affection or love towards will always be an inseparable friend.  From a young age, Shiki was taught that he should use his powers not to hurt others or use them for selfish gain - but to help save someone's life. The mentor he admired told him that killing is something he should never do, no matter what. And Shiki, in his admiration, embodied those words well into where he is now. At heart, he is no murderer. He doesn't have the wickedness of a demon or even the thirst for blood, his only wish is to live a normal life, bereft of all worries.  However.... there is more to him, a side that lays dormant. It is a darker side that resides within him that is his complete opposite... and yet... his true nature.

That is....

The Blood of the Nanaya

Indeed, in every man, there is both light and dark, negatives and positives. In general, men are born with an inherent affinity to accomplish something in life, the affinity to do evil, to commit treason towards the very universe that conceived them and champion malice -  and then there are the well-meaning men who aim to do good, to help those who cannot help themselves, to succeed in life as a champion of good will.  If Shiki is the champion of good will, then Nanaya is the champion of malice... though perhaps champion of murder is more suited  to the hobby that he engages in. Nanaya is everything that Shiki despises. A murderer without any remorse, he is cool, suave, calm, and collected. Every time he does battle, nothing but a smooth smile dominates his expressions. To him, killing is his one true nature, so why fight it? He desires - nay, finds enjoyment in the hunt, in the moment of fear or surprise that fills the face of his prey. In fact, it even brings him sexual satisfaction.  He won't hesitate to fight anyone of interest, in both ability and appearance. His hunter mentality is not easily satisfied, thus very often he will even conduct search operations in the night in order to find a warrior worthy of making his Nanaya blood quicken with anticipation.  Of course, for all that has been used to describe him here, Nanaya isn't necessarily a monster. He has morbid humor, yes. He is also fearless towards the face of death, that is an undeniable fact.  And yet, no matter how sinister he may appear, he does not find joy in useless killing. He isn't a man whom one would deem chivalrous, but he does believe that if one is going to kill and find enjoyment in it, the subject in question must be a worthy opponent.  Good or evil, just or wicked, one's affiliation does not matter in the eyes of Nanaya Shiki. Outside of battle, Nanaya doesn't really interact with others, and whenever he does, it is only on a whim. Even with socializing, he always keeps up a veneer of suave coolness that would be enough to weaken the resolve of almost any woman of strong nature.

This, however, is not Shiki's true nature.  His true nature is only fully realized when he has discarded all contemplation of whether to kill or be killed and gives in to the nature of the natural-born killer residing within his very soul.  It is neither Nanaya nor Shiki, but a middle ground between the two. When Shiki is face to face with someone who has truly hurt his loved ones past the point of no return, he will become an assassin, a merciless hunter who will make his target regret every minute of every second of every single millisecond of their life.  Everything he does embodies the perfect assassin. Cold, indifferent, curt, he won't bother to engage in useless talk. He will, however, speak of how he'll kill his enemy or remain silent while maintaining a deadly aura that would test the mettle of even the most sinister villain.  His speed, his strength, the very body he possesses will go above and beyond the limits,  all so that he can topple his opponent and avenge those most dear to him. In conclusion, there are many sides to Shiki he still has yet to uncover.... and with the introduction of three special women rearing their way into his life, one can only surmise where his hectic path will take him.
